2003 LEGENDS NIGHT

In the summer months of 2003, it was decided that one thing was missing of the “Book End History” of the Greek Football Club was a Legends Team of the 37 years.

A panel of four past players, some of whom were there from the 1st game to spectators at the last game.  In many cases it came to a secret vote to decide what players would be selected. If each of the selectors was to decide their own team it would have ended up four completely teams, so it was decided to select a squad of 37 players, one for each year that the Greek Football Club had existed plus a Coach and an Assistant Coach, 39 in total.

The event was held at Football Park with approximately 300 people in attendance.  Each player named in the squad was presented with a framed guernsey all of which had the number 37 on it, to reflect the 37 years of the history of the Greek Football Club and a Legends medal.

The Legends medals were also presented to Club volunteers and committee personnel. A special moment during the evening was when the three sons of the late Ian (Pinhead) Davey got up on stage to receive their father’s Legends guernsey. Ian had been a great Premiership player for the GFC and a Best and Fairest winner. The Club also presented each of Ian’s sons with their own Legends medal in memory of their late father.

All the awards were presented by the then current Western Warriors Football Club players.

All the guernseys were donated by Jack and Irene Psellos and Peter and Sue Economou of L J Hooker Unley donated the Legends medals.

All in all, it was a great night with past players coming together for a night of reminiscing, storytelling, mateship and many a laugh.
