1993 Articles

Season 1993 was a blue print of the previous year. It began with Stan Condous being re-elected as President and Shane Reardon re-appointed as Senior Coach.  It was Shane’s fourth and final time that he would coach a team at Greek-Camden.

Player movement was still happening with players coming and going.  This did not deter Shane Reardon as he was developing another competitive team every week with some good wins and some tough losses!

During the middle of the season with the A’s just outside the four, rumours of another merger, this time with Henley Football Club were beginning to circulate around the Club just as it had happened in 1986 with Camden Football Club.

At the time Henley Football Club was playing in the SAFA League and with the SAFA folding at the end of the 1993 season, Henley’s aim was to go straight into Division 1. With that aim in mind, a group of Henley Football Club Committee personnel visited the home of Stan Condous (the current President of Greek-Camden Football Club) wanting to discuss a proposed merger with the Greek Football Club for the season 1994.  As a result of those discussions special meetings were held at both Greek-Camden and Henley Football Clubs to discuss the merger. After the first meeting of the Greek-Camden Football Club it was decided to have a second meeting to vote for or against the merger with Henley Football Club. The result being that the original Greek Football Club side of Greek-Camden would merge with Henley Football Club and be called Henley Greek Football Club.

Camden would stay at Camden Oval as a sole entity however Plympton High Old Scholars Football Club approached Camden and a merger proposal was discussed as the oval that was PHOS’s home ground (Myer Oval) was going to be developed into a housing estate. The merger went ahead and the Club was renamed PHOS-Camden Football Club and has been a formidable Football Club over the years. As a merged Club they have won 2 A1 Amateur League Premierships and have a very strong junior programme and a very strong supporter base.

So, the Greek Football Club left Camden and ended up at Henley Memorial Oval.  The Henley Greek merger did not sit well with a lot of the Greek Football Club members and supporters and the move turned out to be disastrous for the Greek Football Club.  Only a few players and supporters moved over to Henley Greek with a lot of the diehard Greek Football Club supporters staying at Camden.

Now back to the season’s ending and the end of an era.  The A’s missed out on being in the final four and finished in 5th position.

R. Hall won the A’s Best and Fairest.
