1989 Articles

The year 1989 started with Tom Frossinakis stepping down as President and Malcolm Wilson being elected as President for the first time. Malcolm was the first anglo-saxon to be elected as President since 1964 (a premiership year). Could this be a sign of another premiership year?

Mick Kenny was re-appointed Senior Coach after a successful 1988 season with the A1 division making the Preliminary final.

Terry Evreniadis was re-appointed Coach of the B’s after taking the A1 Reserves to a Grand Final victory in 1988 over Broadview, who were undefeated all season.

Peter Fagg was re-appointed Coach of the C’s after coaching the C’s to a Premiership in 1988 against a tough Kilburn.

During the year Greek Camden won many tough battles against good opposition teams but Broadview was their main arch rival. Greek Camden finished 2nd in the minor round.

The B’s made the first Semi Final against Adelaide Uni but lost in a close game and finished 4th for the season.

The following week saw Greek Camden A Grade play Broadview in the 2nd Semi Final with the winner to go straight to the Grand Final and that is exactly what Greek Camden did with a convincing win over Broadview.

The following week Broadview played Greenacres in the Preliminary Final. Greek Camden players, coaches and supporters travelled to the game to see who they would be playing in the Grand Final.

Broadview was well in control and won the game in what was a very hard and contested game. Broadview Coach, Tony Roache, took his star players off the ground during the last quarter to prevent any injuries or reports knowing the Grand Final was to be played the next week.

What a Grand Final, Greek Camden versus Broadview!!!

Greek Camden went into the Grand Final as favorites. There was quiet air of confidence around the Club in the week leading up to the Grand Final knowing that the game still had to be played.

On the day of the Grand Final the Coach, Mick Kenny, could not have prepared the team any better. Greek Camden ran out onto the ground in front of a very large crowd. The siren sounds and Jack Solomon scores the 1st goal of the game with the first minute. Gee, that was easy, however that is where it ended.  Greek Camden were down at half time by a significant amount and Greek Camden did not kick another goal until late into the third quarter.

Broadview won by over 100 points.

Supporters, staff and players left the ground shaking their heads in disbelief and it still hurts!!

If there was any consolation to be had North Adelaide only kicked 1 goal against Port Adelaide in the SANFL Grand Final the same year.

Greek Camden players received a lot of criticism for their performance which was very unfair and not called for. Broadview were the better team all year and they proved it on the “big stage” at the Grand Final. You can’t change the result, you can only move on to 1990 and wonder what it will bring to the Club.

A proud moment for the Club was that Barry Loader won the SAAFL Division 9 Lees Medal with 21 votes.

Barry also won the C Grade Best and Fairest.

Tom Hank won the A Best and Fairest.

Although the A team lost the Grand Final all in all the Club had a very successful year.
