1988 Articles

After a very successful 1987 Tom Frossinakis was elected as President and Peter Phillipou stepped down as A Grade Coach.

The job was now to find a Coach.  The Club didn’t have to look too far.   Mick Kenny, a true champion of the Club since 1984 and a Premiership player in 1985 was appointed Coach for 1988.

Rob Donaldson was appointed as his Assistant and Trevor Ellis, also a Premiership player in 1985 was appointed Bench Coach.

Terry Evreniadis was appointed B Grade Coach (A1 Reserves), Peter Fagg was appointed Coach of the C Grade (A8) and Rod Corsey was appointed Fitness Co-Ordinator. Some very strong appointments there.

All systems go.  2nd year of the merger, what will it bring?

All three teams were winning their share of games and at the 10 game mark of the season all 3 teams were 7 wins and 3 losses. (Put that in your trivia bank).  Finals look like a reality.  As the season went on it looked like all 3 teams were going to make the finals and they did.

At the end of the Minor Round A’s, B’s and C’s finished 3rd, 2nd and 2nd respectively.  The Club overcame the 2nd year blues.  A fitting result and effort made by all involved (players, Coaches, Staff and Committee).  Now for the Premiership hunt.

FINALS

1st Semi Final A1 Greek-Camden played Riverside at Thebarton Oval and won very comfortably and progressed to the Preliminary Final. (Scores not available).

The B’s (A1 Reserves) played top side Broadview at Unley Oval but unfortunately were beaten. (Scores unavailable).  So, the Club had A’s and B’s playing off in the Preliminary Finals.

Meanwhile the C’s (A8) played top side Kilburn in the 2nd Semi Final at Seaton Ramblers ground only to see the Blues boys win an exciting see-sawing game and progressed straight into the Grand Final.

The Preliminary A1 final was a disappointing one as Greek-Camden lost. So that meant the A’s were out of the finals. Still a good effort.

The B’s (A1 Reserves) in the Preliminary Final beat Adelaide University and marched on to the Grand Final.

The C’s (A8) played Kilburn in the Grand Final. It was a close, tough encounter and no place for the faint hearted. Greek Camden came out deserving winners.  No scores or goal kickers available. The C’s Match Report of the game is documented by Coach Peter Fagg.

The following week the A1 Reserves Grand Final was contested by Greek-Camden and top side Broadview who were red hot favorites to win and were undefeated all year. We’ll see about that!

Greek-Camden started off well aided by a 4-5 goal wind and kicking the first 3 goals. These were the only goals kicked in the quarter. At half time Greek-Camden found themselves behind by 3 points.

Greek-Camden found it hard to breakaway in the 3rd quarter only kicking two goals and found themselves leading by a shaky 4 points.  In the last quarter Greek-Camden, kicking against a 4-5 goal wind were held scoreless but held Broadview to 2 points and eventually winning the Grand Final by 2 points thanks to the mighty effort of the Greek-Camden defence. Please refer to Coach Terry Evreniadis’s Game Report in attached documents.

Watch the video. It is one of the most heart stopping games to view and you can appreciate the strength of the wind against the trees.

Scores: Greek-Camden 5-7 (37) points to Broadview 5-5 (35) points
