1980 Articles

1980 saw Singapore Airlines become the Club’s major sponsor and also the reappointment of Bob Alexander after a successfuldebut in A2.  Michael Varvounis was re elected President and Ange Mele and George Evreniadis were appointed as B and C Coaches respectively.

Towards the end of the minor round the A team were locked away in a 3 way battle for the double chance only to finish 3rd.  The C’s also made the finals only to lose to Plympton Old Scholars 9-11 (65) to 8-6 (54) in a close game.

In the 1st Semi Final the A’s fought off a determined Sacred Heart Old Collegians to win 15-11 (101) to 9-13 (67).  Goal scorers were R Alexander, G Hogan and I Davey each with 3, B Rogers 2, R Klavens, J Samaras and J Mann 1 each.

The following week saw the Greeks defeat Seaton Ramblers in the Preliminary Final 16-5 (101) to 12-13 (85).  Goal scorers were I Davey, J Mann 3 each, B Rogers, T Evreniadis,      S Pryor each with 2 and R Alexander, G Bryant and S Wotton 1 each.

Terry Evreniadis, star full forward was reported by the field umpire, known to all as Lionel (Terry’s mate).  Movie evidence was presented at the Tribunal but to no avail so Terry missed the Grand Final along with full back, Bob Targa who was injured.  So, the Club’s full forward and full back were out of the Grand Final.  Good news was the Club qualified for A1.

The Grand Final was full of incidents. (Not necessarily in order).

A spectator was running around calling out racial comments to the Greek team and supporters. An offduty police officer then apprehended the man.

Next, a full count was held by the umpire after the opposing team (West Croydon) noticed that the Greeks had an extra player on the field.  The count showed the Greeks had the right number of players.

The Greeks were the underdogs going into the game and right up to ¾ time they were only trailing by 1 point, only to see West Croydon take control to win by 25 points, 16-21 (117) to 14-8 (92) in a very entertaining game.

Goal scorers were M Grootheede, B Rogers, G Bryant, J Tsouflidis 2 each, and I Davey, J Rogers, J Kyriacou, R Alexander and Ray Klavens 1 each.

Although disappointed at not winning the game the Greek Football Club had achieved its objective of promotion to A1 Division, even though it had not won a premiership in Amateur League.

Terry Evreniadis won his 2nd A Grade Best and Fairest.

Paul Condous won the B Grade Best and Fairest.

Emanuel Lavrentiadis won the C Grade Best and Fairest.

Now for the big challenge in A1.
