1974 Articles

1974 saw the return of our first 1963 Premiership Coach Pat Veaney.  Pat returned from a three-year stint coaching West Torrens Junior Colts. (1965-1967).

Tom Frossinakis was elected President and Ange Mele was appointed A Grade Captain.  Tom Melios was appointed Captain Coach of the B’s and Jerry Paxinos was appointed Captain Coach of the C’s (the hardest Coaching appointment of the Club).

The Greeks played Glenunga in round eight and Glenunga won, however shortly after the game finished it was discovered that Glenunga had played a player who was both unregistered and playing under a fictitious name and was a Sturt Football Club seconds player. A protest was lodged with the League and a tribunal hearing was scheduled. The outcome of the tribunal was that the score from the game was revoked and the Greek Football team were given the two match points.

The A team finished 6th with 11 wins and 9 losses with a percentage of 58.51%. All year they were knocking on the door of the top 4.

The B team won 13 games and lost 7 with a percentage of 57.4%, sadly missing out on the finals by 0.4%.

The C team however was a different story.  It was impossible to select a team on a Thursday night because you never knew who and how many players would actually turn up to play the game on the Saturday. The C team started many a Saturday with only 14 players and had to forfeit some games during the season due to lack of players.

Angelo Mele won Best and Fairest for the A’s.

Marcel Groothedde won Best and Fairest for the B’s.

Harry Moularas won the Best and Fairest for the C’s.

Footnote: The Club needed a new direction and plans were being drafted for new Clubrooms to be built with recreational facilities as the existing facilities were far too inadequate. Manuel Bambacas, Manuel Politis and Manuel Lavrentiadis were the main instigators in the move to providing new Clubrooms.
