1973 Articles
The start of the year saw a change in the logo on the guernsey to a large Greek Football Club monogram in the centre of the jumper similar to Carlton’s guernsey. Nick Mourcella had a prototype made in 1972, played in it as seen in the photo of 1972. It was accepted by the Committee and that logo stayed with the Club up until 1993. (22 years).
New image, new Coach! John Carrangis stood down after one year but continued to play.
Steve Condous was appointed Coach of the A and B teams. John Carrangis styled the team play around skill and encouragement whilst Steve Condous built the team around aggression. If John Carrangis was the calm, Steve was the storm. (no doubt about that).
George Evreniadis was appointed Coach of the inaugural C Grade.
For most of the season the A’s were just out of the four, beating teams above them but losing to teams below them.
The A’s finished in 6th position with the B’s finishing just outside the four in 5th position. The C’s finished 6th winning 8 games. In some games they only started with 14 men and forfeited some games, but they did strengthen the A and B teams.
One noticeable achievement was first year player in Mick O’Flaherty who started the year in the C grade, then progressed to the B’s and then played ¾ of the season in the A’s where he also won the A Grade Best and Fairest. John Genimihaliotis won the B Grade Best and Fairest.
Being our second year in A3 the Greek Football Club held its own.
The Club was also having sold out functions during the year.
One stand out game that year was the Past V Present players and was held one Sunday at Stirling Oval in the Adelaide Hills. About 500 people attended with barbeques, live music and the game was commentated by Phil Lisgos on the speaker system. It was done in Greek and English. (It was so funny.!)
