After last year’s debacle with Sacred Heart Old Collegians which attracted media attention and bad publicity the Club found it hard to attract new players and also there was an exodus of many players and personnel. Financially the Club was on its knees.
Emmanuel Bambacas stood down as President after serving four straight years and was replaced by Emanuel Politis. Now they needed a Coach. 1968 Premiership Coach Trevor Barker was appointed. As happened in 1969 the Club applied to have Trevor Barker white washed and unfortunately it failed. It was ironical that other ex-league players were able to obtain permission without much difficulty. A non-playing Coach was the go.
1971 saw the return of co-founder Michael Cacas as a player after approximately eight years. (Sadly, he got injured in the early part of the game and that was the end of his playing days.) and also, the return of George Christopoulous from Nightcliffe Football Club, Darwin.
The A Grade started well and after the first six games they were sitting top with six wins, then came the run of losses and they recovered to find themselves sitting third at the end of the minor round.
Now for the 1st semi-final against Pulteney Old Scholars. Trevor Barker notified the Club that he would be unavailable to take training and also coach on the day of the match. Tom Frossinakis stood in as coach and although the scores were all tied up at three quarter time the Greeks were unable to hold off a determined and fit Pulteney Old Scholars team and went down by 27 points. 12-12 (84) to 8-9 (57).
Considering the problems the Club had at the beginning of the year it was quite credible where they finished up.
Best and Fairest for the A’s was John Carrangis and B Grade Best and Fairest was Con Kolokas.
